Harpos on Fire?
Social media reports today had Detroit rock fans worried that the legendary east-side club Harpos had gone up in flames. While that wasn’t true, the Detroit Fire Department confirmed there was a fire at the building.
A Detroit Fire Department spokesperson told the Free Press this afternoon that someone passing by the club, located at 14238 Harper Ave., called in a report that they smelled smoke.The fire department responded and was there for 38 minutes.
It’s unclear how extensive the damage was, according to the spokesman. A Free Press photographer who drove by the building Thursday afternoon could not see any damage from the outside.
Reached by the Free Press, a man who identified himself as a manager for the club and gave his name as Mike M., said that there had been some maintenance on the property recently but “we’re all good.”
He added that employees from Harpos first heard rumors about the fire on Facebook. About 2:39 p.m. an administrator for the Harpos’ Facebook page posted this message to fans: “Relax all is well but thanks for the concern over nothing.”
The 29,000 sqaure-foot concert theater is currently listed as being for sale on http://www.churchrealestatesales.com. It’s listed at $699,000.
